Description

Used in many Southeast Asian countries, the body is made of woods like jackfruit or coconut, the heads of buffalo- and goat-hide.
There are 2 main groups:

The 2 main groupings consist of:
* The conical () Java/Sunda set of 3 to 4 curve sided drums with heads of different sizes.
* The cylindrical || Bali set of two pairs of straight sided drums, both heads same size.

Actually there are 3 sets of Indonesian gamelan kendang: (other countries also have some.)

* The Java set of 4 double conical drums:
** bassdrum Kendhang gendhing or Kendhang ageng
** tenordrum Kendhang wayang
** altdrum Kendhang batangan or Kendhang ciblon
** sopranodrum Kendhang ketipung

* The Sunda set of 3 truncated cone drums:
** bassdrum Kendhang gede
** altdrum Kendhang ciblon
** sopranodrum Kendhang ketipung

* The Bali cylindrical (or slightly truncated cone) set of 2 pairs of drums:
** high pitched kendang lanang
** low pithed kendan wadon
